RiderCoach Training Information

The Illinois State University Motorcycle Safety Education Program is looking or a few service oriented men and women to join our part-time staff of motorcycle safety education RiderCoaches. The level of responsibility is high but the satisfaction of assisting other people as they improve their mental skills, physical coordination, and life saving driving strategies is extremely rewarding!

Over one hundred experienced motorcyclists are currently employed by the Illinois State University Motorcycle Safety Education Program in one of the largest motorcycle safety programs in the United States. Most of our RiderCoaches are "veteran" motorcyclists who have been actively involved in rider education for many years. All of them have completed the RiderCoach Preparation Course and maintain current certification credentials through the Motorcycle Safety Foundation.

The Illinois State University Motorcycle Safety Education Program selectively accepts applications for enrollment in the RiderCoach Preparation Course and Certification Program from individuals who:

• Are at least eighteen years of age,
• Have excellent verbal and written communication skills,
• Have excellent social skills with a strong interest in helping other people,
• Have an Illinois class "M" motorcycle operators license or equivalent from another state,
• Have completed the Basic RiderCourse (BRC)
• Currently operate a motorcycle on a frequent basis, and
• Have a clean driving record with no possibility for license suspension or revocation.

Individuals accepted into the RiderCoach Training Course must successfully complete:

• A riding skills test to demonstrate riding proficiency,
• An 80+ hour classroom/riding instruction course conducted by certified chief instructors/RiderCoach Trainers,
• A written knowledge test of the course curriculum and other highway safety issues,
• A student teaching evaluation phase to demonstrate communication abilities and proficiency at evaluating and coaching novice students, and
• Sign the RiderCoach Rules of Professional Conduct form.

Once certified, a RiderCoach must:

• Attend annual refresher courses, and
• Maintain first-aid certification through the American Red Cross as a minimum.

Because certain areas of our training region are understaffed and enrollment in these courses is limited, we reserve the right to select course candidates geographically.

The 2008 training program is scheduled as follows:

• September 5,6,7 and 12,13,14, (Friday 6pm - 10pm, Sat. and Sun. 8am - 5pm)
• and student teaching
• September 19,20,21 or 26,27,28 (Friday 6pm - 10pm, Sat. and Sun. 8am - 5pm)
